Plus <minus> payout:

This payout portion was instituted a number of years ago to "reward" or payback if you will, the guy who got shafted the most out of his draft picks.  There is a +/- column added to the printouts that calculates how many points your draft pick scored over or <under> his regular season average during the NCAA tournament.  It's a simple calculation of multiplying the number of games played times the player's reg season average less the total points scored in the tournament.  This becomes the +/- calculated number for each draft pick.

Before the tournament starts, we can only go on what our draft picks scored per game during the regular season.  We have no control over how they are asked to perform by the coaching staff or actually perform in pressure situations during the NCAA tournament, so their tournament scoring may or may not be affected negatively.  We may also be affected by draft night mistakes where a player is drafted that for whatever reason probably or will not play in the tournament due to injury or suspension.

This year the accumulated points lost from all 10 draft teams was an astounding <534>.  Team Lehman <184> led the way with a total of <184> which accoring to the +/- recalc not only cost them finishing in a money position but winning the tournament game!  Team Lehman earned 1/2 of their entry fee back for taking this honor in 2018.  Team Noffke and the Commissioner had triple digit <-> amounts as well.  Had Team Noffke's draft picks scored at their regular seasonal average they too would have finished in the money (3rd) instead of 7th were they ended up.   in fact between those the most negative amounts from his draft picks in the 2017 NCAA tournament, so Dennis will earn about 1/2 his entry fee or $65.  On the opposite end, Team FORESTA  was one of only two drafing teams to finish better than regular season with a +30 from their draft picks.  Team Trevino ended up better by 17 total points.

With the recalc, Team Lehman would have finished in 1st instead of 4th, SID would have ended up in 2nd place and Noffke 3rd place instead of 7th place.  Hammer and Foresta who finished in a money position would not have made it in the top 3.  The other "non money" position changes are shown below on the +/- recalc.

The recalculated rerun of the points with the negative totals added back and the positive totals subtracted ended up at:

note: the player averages used are from ESPN.com's website after the regular season is over and before they play in any post season tournament game.  The only exception to this would be from those teams who came out of nowhere to qualify which almost always happens and then we use whatever their end of the year (including post season tournament) average per game

  • Best Players : Malik Newman (Kansas) drafted by Dennis Hammer 33rd overall in the 4th round and for the 2nd year in a row, the leading tournament scorer was the best +/- player.  Newman finished at + 48 points.  Gabe DeVoe (Clemson) also drafted by Dennis Hammer 108th overall in the 11th round.  DeVoe finished the tournament + 36 in only 3 games played as he average 25.0 per game versus his 13.0 per game average in the regular season.  Dennis in those two picks was a combined 84 points positive, this plus DiVincenzo's performance in the Final Game helped propel him to 3rd place this year.
  • Worst Players : Dean Wade (Kansas St) a 11th round, 106th overall pick, accumulated a <63> point total for the Team Lehman.  I believe Wade injured his foot during the Big 12 tournament and was only able to play 8 minutes in their 3rd game against Kentucky who they beat.  Isaac Haas (Purdue) the 22nd overall pick in the draft for Team Noffke ended up <35>.  Haas took an akward fall in their first game and injured his right (non shooting) elbow.  He did not play again if I recollect the next 2 games in the tournament.
