Russ Smith (Louisville) was the first choice in the draft taken by Ralph Trevino's team. The 6'1, 165 pound guard doesn't have an over abundant jumping ability but makes up for it with his quickness. Smith averaged almost 4.5 points per game more in the tournament versus the regular season, providing Trevino with an additional 27 points over and above what might have been expected. Trey Burke (Michigan) finished a distant 2nd in scoring this year, 41 points behind with a total of 93 points. Burke, like Smith played 6 games this year in the tournament and Burke actually averaged more per game during the regular season 19.2 versus Smith's 17.9 but accumulated a <22> points which put him that much behind after the tournament was over. Had both players performed as they did in the regular season, Burke would have won the scoring title this year. The all time tournament scoring record is held by Glen Rice (Michigan) who in 1989 scored 184 points over 6 games for a 30.7 pts per game average. Smith's output provided Team Trevino, an additional $25 bonus in addition to the $10 he won for winning the draft round Top 20 scorers from the tournament are shown below........ the Commissioner is the only drafter who did not have a player in the top 20 scoring for the tournament. It is interesting to see a 15th, 16th & 23rd round selections here finish in the 20.
